How IB points are calculated
The IB Diploma total is the sum of six subject grades, each from 1 to 7, plus up to 3 bonus points from Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (EE). Three or four subjects are taken at Higher Level and the rest at Standard Level.
The total is only part of the picture. A candidate with 30 points can still fail to receive the Diploma if, for example, they have a grade 1 in any subject or an E in TOK. This calculator checks the points-based conditions so families can see the risks as well as the score.
Most schools in Singapore share predicted grades during the final year, and universities make offers on them. Use the calculator to see how close a student is to a target, then focus effort where a single grade would make the biggest difference.
TOK and EE bonus points
| TOK \ EE | A | B | C | D | E |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | Fail |
| B | 3 | 2 | 2 | 1 | Fail |
| C | 2 | 2 | 1 | 0 | Fail |
| D | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Fail |
| E | Fail | Fail | Fail | Fail | Fail |
Award conditions are set by the IB and can change. Confirm the current rules with your school's Diploma Programme coordinator.
IB points FAQs
How is the IB Diploma scored?
Each of the six subjects is graded from 1 to 7, giving up to 42 points. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are graded A to E and combine for up to 3 bonus points using the core points matrix. The maximum total is 45.
What is the minimum score to pass the IB Diploma?
At least 24 points, but 24 is not enough on its own. Candidates must also meet the other award conditions, such as no grade 1, no E in TOK or the Extended Essay, minimum points at HL and SL, and completion of CAS.
How many bonus points do TOK and the Extended Essay give?
Between 0 and 3, depending on the combination of grades. Two A grades, or an A and a B, give 3 points. A grade E in either component is a failing condition, regardless of the total.
Do universities use predicted grades?
Yes. Most university applications are made with predicted grades before final results are released in early July for May exams. A realistic calculation helps families set targets and choose where to apply.
Short of a target grade in one subject?
One grade in the right subject often changes the total, or the award conditions, more than anything else. Tell us the subject and level, and we will suggest where to focus.
