IB Math AI tutor Singapore
IB Math AI tutors for SL and HL students in Singapore.
One-to-one support for Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation, from calculator fluency and statistics to modelling questions that ask students to explain what the numbers mean.
The course
What IB Math AI covers.
Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation focuses on mathematics as it is used: data, statistics, modelling, and technology. SL has 150 recommended teaching hours and HL has 240. The five topic areas share their names with AA, but the content inside them is quite different.
Number and algebra
Approximation and error, standard form, arithmetic and geometric sequences, and financial mathematics: compound interest, annuities, and loan amortisation. HL adds complex numbers, matrices, and eigenvalues.
Functions
Building and choosing models: linear, quadratic, exponential, power, and sinusoidal functions fitted to real situations. HL adds logistic models, logarithmic scaling, and transformations of graphs.
Geometry and trigonometry
Trigonometry in 2D and 3D, surface area and volume, and Voronoi diagrams. HL adds vectors, adjacency matrices, and graph theory, including shortest-path and route problems.
Statistics and probability
Data collection, regression, Spearman's rank correlation, and hypothesis testing, including chi-squared tests. HL adds the Poisson distribution, confidence intervals, transition matrices, and further testing.
Calculus
Differentiation and integration applied to rates of change, optimisation, and areas, including the trapezoidal rule. HL adds kinematics, differential equations, Euler's method, and slope fields.
Assessment
How AI SL and HL are examined.
Unlike AA, there is no calculator-free paper: a graphing calculator is used throughout. Paper 1 is short questions across the course, Paper 2 is longer structured questions, and HL students also sit Paper 3, two extended problems that build towards a general result. The Exploration is the internally assessed component.
Official IB mathematics overview| Component | Format | SL | HL |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Graphing calculator, short questions | 1 h 30 min · 40% | 2 h · 30% |
| Paper 2 | Graphing calculator, longer questions | 1 h 30 min · 40% | 2 h · 30% |
| Paper 3 | Graphing calculator, two extended problems | Not taken | 1 h · 20% |
| Exploration (IA) | Individual written investigation | 20% | 20% |
Where marks go
Five places AI students commonly lose marks.
AI students often feel they "did the maths right" and still score below expectation. The gap is usually in technique and written interpretation, which can be practised directly.
Calculator fluency under time pressure
Every AI paper assumes a graphing calculator. Students who know the mathematics but hunt through menus for the finance solver, regression, or statistical tests lose time on every question.
Conclusions to hypothesis tests
The calculation is often right, but marks go on the conclusion: stating the hypotheses in context, comparing the p-value with the significance level, and writing what the result means for the situation.
Choosing and justifying a model
Questions ask which model fits the data and why. Picking a function without referring to the shape of the data, the context, or the limits of the model is a common way to lose marks.
Accuracy and units
Answers are expected to three significant figures unless the question says otherwise, money to two decimal places, and with units. Early rounding inside a multi-step problem also costs accuracy marks.
Interpreting, not just computing
"Interpret", "comment", and "justify" questions carry real marks. Students who stop at the number, without explaining what it means, regularly drop these.
The Exploration
The internal assessment is 20% of the grade.
The Exploration is an individual written investigation of around 12 to 20 pages, marked by the school and moderated by the IB, out of 20 against the five criteria shown. AI Explorations often use real data or model a real situation, which makes them engaging but adds risks of their own.
The usual problems are data that is too small or too messy to support the analysis, a statistical test chosen without checking that it suits the data, and conclusions that go beyond what the results show. Each of these is easier to fix before data collection than after.
What a tutor can and cannot do.
A tutor can teach the statistics or modelling involved, explain the criteria, and help the student judge whether a plan is workable. The student chooses the direction, handles the data, carries out the mathematics, and writes every word. EliteMind does not write or complete assessed work.
How lessons work
A plan that follows the two-year course.
Calculator and statistics habits
Learn the calculator functions alongside each topic, not just before exams, and build a routine for writing hypotheses, conclusions, and interpretations in context.
Exploration and HL depth
Support the Exploration within the rules, then cover the remaining content, including the HL topics such as matrices, graph theory, and differential equations, with regular mixed practice.
Exam technique
Timed past papers, a review of every lost mark by type, and focused work on the written explanations that separate a 5 from a 7.

Tuition rates
What IB Math AI tuition costs.
A practical market range for one-to-one IB tuition in Singapore is approximately S$55 to S$130 per hour. HL support and tutors with long IB teaching experience tend to sit in the upper part of the range. This is planning guidance, not a quotation; the exact rate is confirmed before lessons begin.

IB Math AI tuition FAQs
How much does an IB Math AI tutor cost in Singapore?
As an indicative Singapore market guide, one-to-one IB tuition commonly falls around S$55 to S$130 per hour. HL support and tutors with long IB teaching experience tend to sit in the upper part of that range. EliteMind confirms the tutor's exact rate before any lesson starts.
Is IB Math AI easier than Math AA?
Not necessarily. AI replaces much of AA's algebra and proof with statistics, modelling, and interpretation, which suits some students better. AI HL in particular is demanding, with matrices, graph theory, and differential equations. The better course is the one that meets the student's university requirements and lets them perform well.
Which university courses accept Math AI?
Many courses in business, psychology, social sciences, life sciences, and design accept AI. Some engineering, physics, mathematics, and computer science courses require AA, often at HL. Requirements differ between universities, so check each course's published entry requirements before choosing.
Can a tutor help with the Math AI Exploration?
A tutor can help a student find a topic with real data or a real problem to model, understand the five assessment criteria, and check that the statistics or modelling is used correctly. The student must choose the direction, collect or select the data, do the mathematics, and write the Exploration themselves. EliteMind does not write or complete assessed work.
Which calculator does my child need for Math AI?
AI is built around a graphing calculator in every paper, so it needs to be one the IB allows in examinations. Use the model the school specifies, and practise on that same model, because tutoring time spent learning a different calculator is time lost.
When is the IB Math AI exam?
Most international schools in Singapore sit the May examination session at the end of Year 2. Some schools that follow the local January to November calendar sit the November session. Ask the school which session your child is entered for, because it sets the revision timeline.
