IB Biology tutor Singapore
IB Biology tutors for the current SL and HL syllabus.
One-to-one support for Diploma Biology students in Singapore, focused on connecting ideas across the four themes, answering to the command term, and handling the data that runs through both papers.
The course
The four themes of IB Biology.
The current course, first examined in 2025, organises biology into four themes, each studied at four levels of organisation: molecules, cells, organisms, and ecosystems. SL has 150 recommended teaching hours and HL has 240, and HL extends every theme rather than adding separate options.
A. Unity and diversity
Water, nucleic acids, the origins and structure of cells, viruses, diversity of organisms, classification, and conservation of biodiversity.
B. Form and function
Carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, membranes, gas exchange, transport in plants and animals, and adaptations of muscle and skeleton.
C. Interaction and interdependence
Enzymes and metabolism, respiration and photosynthesis, cell signalling, neural and hormonal control, immunity, populations, and energy flow in ecosystems.
D. Continuity and change
DNA replication and protein synthesis, mitosis and meiosis, inheritance, homeostasis, natural selection, and stability and change in ecosystems.
Levels of organisation
Each theme is studied at the molecular, cellular, organism, and ecosystem levels, and exam questions often ask students to connect two or more levels.
The HL extension
HL deepens topics within each theme, such as gene expression, the detail of respiration and photosynthesis, and evolution, rather than adding stand-alone option topics.
Assessment
How IB Biology is examined now.
There are two written papers and an internal assessment; Paper 3 and the option topics were removed. Paper 1B is built around data and experimental scenarios, and Paper 2 combines data-based questions with extended responses that reward organised, well-linked biology.
Official IB Biology overview| Component | Format | SL | HL |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 1A multiple choice, 1B data-based questions | 1 h 30 min · 36% | 2 h · 36% |
| Paper 2 | Data-based, short-answer, and extended-response questions | 1 h 30 min · 44% | 2 h 30 min · 44% |

Where marks go
Five places Biology students commonly lose marks.
Biology students often know a lot of content and still underperform, because IB marking rewards precise, structured answers. These habits can be trained directly.
Ignoring the command term
"Outline", "explain", "compare and contrast", and "evaluate" each require a different answer. Writing a description when the question asks for an explanation is one of the most common ways to lose marks.
Imprecise vocabulary
Mark schemes look for specific terms, such as active site, concentration gradient, or allele frequency. Everyday phrasing, even when the idea is right, often fails to earn the mark.
Reading graphs and tables
Data questions ask for trends with figures quoted from the data, comparisons, and cautious conclusions. Students lose marks by describing without numbers or by claiming causation from correlation.
Extended responses without structure
Long answers are marked point by point. Students who write a lot without organising key points, or who repeat one point several ways, collect fewer marks than their knowledge deserves.
Connecting levels and themes
Questions increasingly link ideas, for example from DNA to protein to the organism. Students who learn topics in isolation struggle to build these connections under time pressure.
Internal assessment
The scientific investigation is 20% of the grade.
Each student carries out an open-ended investigation and writes a report of up to 3,000 words, marked by the school and moderated by the IB against four equally weighted criteria. All science students also take part in the collaborative sciences project, which is required but not graded.
Biology investigations are often limited by living material: small sample sizes, natural variation, and variables that are hard to control. Planning enough repeats and choosing a suitable statistical test before collecting data makes the analysis and evaluation far stronger.
What a tutor can and cannot do.
A tutor can teach the biology, experimental design, and statistics the investigation needs, and explain the criteria. The student designs the investigation, collects and analyses the data, and writes the report. EliteMind does not write or complete assessed work.
How lessons work
A plan that follows the two-year course.
Foundations and answer habits
Secure molecular and cell biology, and build the habit of answering to the command term with precise vocabulary from the first test onwards.
Investigation and connections
Support the internal assessment within the rules, complete the remaining themes and HL content, and practise questions that link levels of organisation.
Exam technique
Timed papers, planned extended responses, and data-based practice, with every lost mark sorted by type so revision targets the real gaps.
Tutor standards
What every tutor we match must do.
The exact course, not just the subject
A tutor is matched on the specific course and level, such as IB Math AA HL or Cambridge IGCSE 0620 Extended, and recent experience teaching it.
Teaches to the mark scheme
Lessons connect content to how marks are actually awarded: command terms, paper structure, and the errors examiners see most.
Diagnoses before teaching
The first lessons identify where marks are being lost, using the student's own recent work, before a plan is set.
Keeps parents informed
Families get short, specific updates: what was covered, what improved, and what comes next.
Academic honesty, always
Tutors teach the skills behind coursework and internal assessments. They never write or complete assessed work.
Fit reviewed early
The match is reviewed after the first few lessons, and the plan or approach is adjusted if it is not working.

Tuition rates
What IB Biology tuition costs.
A practical market range for this kind of one-to-one tuition in Singapore is approximately S$55 to S$130 per hour. HL support and tutors with long IB Biology teaching experience tend to sit in the upper part of the range. This is planning guidance, not a quotation; the exact rate is confirmed before lessons begin.

IB Biology tuition FAQs
How much does IB Biology tuition cost in Singapore?
As an indicative Singapore market guide, one-to-one tuition for this course commonly falls around S$55 to S$130 per hour. Tutors with long experience of the exact syllabus tend to sit in the upper part of that range. EliteMind confirms the tutor's exact rate before any lesson starts.
What changed in the IB Biology syllabus?
The current course was first examined in 2025. Content is organised into four themes studied at four levels of organisation instead of numbered topics and options, Paper 3 and the options were removed, and Paper 1 gained data-based questions in section 1B.
Should my child take IB Biology at SL or HL?
HL Biology is commonly expected for medicine, biomedical science, and life science degrees, usually alongside HL Chemistry. SL suits students who want a science in the Diploma without that requirement. Check the entry requirements of the specific courses your child is considering.
Is IB Biology mostly memorisation?
There is a lot of content, but the marks increasingly go to applying it: interpreting unfamiliar data, explaining processes in sequence, and linking ideas across themes. Memorising notes without practising these skills is a common reason for disappointing results.
Can a tutor help with the IB Biology internal assessment?
A tutor can teach the biology and statistics behind the investigation, explain the four criteria, and help the student think through sample sizes and controls. The student must design the investigation, collect and analyse the data, and write the report. EliteMind does not write or complete assessed work.
When is the IB Biology exam?
Most international schools in Singapore sit the May examination session at the end of Year 2. Some schools that follow the local January to November calendar sit the November session. Ask the school which session your child is entered for, because it sets the revision timeline.
