IB Chemistry tutor Singapore

IB Chemistry tutors for the current SL and HL syllabus.

One-to-one support for Diploma Chemistry students in Singapore, organised around the Structure and Reactivity framework, the redesigned papers, and the calculations and explanations that decide grades.

The course

How IB Chemistry is organised now.

The current IB Chemistry course, first examined in 2025, is built around two strands: Structure (what substances are made of and how they are held together) and Reactivity (why and how they change). SL has 150 recommended teaching hours and HL has 240, with the HL extension spread through both strands.

Structure 1: Particulate matter

Atomic structure, isotopes, electron configurations, the mole, and the gas laws. HL adds ionisation energies and their link to electron arrangement.

Structure 2: Bonding

Ionic, covalent, and metallic bonding, intermolecular forces, and molecular shape. HL adds formal charge, sigma and pi bonds, and hybridisation.

Structure 3: Classifying matter

The periodic table, periodic trends, and functional groups and naming in organic chemistry. HL adds transition element properties and isomerism.

Reactivity 1: Energy

Enthalpy changes, Hess's law, bond enthalpies, and energy from fuels. HL adds Born-Haber cycles, entropy, and Gibbs energy.

Reactivity 2: Amount, rate, and extent

Reacting masses and yields, rates of reaction, and equilibrium. HL adds rate equations, the Arrhenius equation, and equilibrium calculations.

Reactivity 3: Mechanisms

Acids and bases, redox, electrochemical cells, and organic reaction types. HL adds pH curves and buffers, electrode potentials, and SN1, SN2, and electrophilic addition mechanisms.

Assessment

How IB Chemistry is examined now.

Like the other sciences, Chemistry now has two written papers and an internal assessment, with no Paper 3 and no option topics. Paper 1B uses data and unfamiliar experimental contexts, so practical understanding is tested in the exam as well as in the internal assessment.

Where marks go

Five places Chemistry students commonly lose marks.

Chemistry marks are usually lost through method and precision rather than missing knowledge. The same errors tend to repeat across tests, which is what makes them fixable.

01

Mole calculations

Multi-step stoichiometry, limiting reagents, and titration questions punish small slips. Students who do not set out each step clearly also lose method marks when the final answer is wrong.

02

Organic mechanisms and naming

Curly arrows must start and end in exactly the right place, and IUPAC names must follow the rules. HL students lose marks on SN1 versus SN2 and on intermediates.

03

Linking structure to properties

Explaining a boiling point, solubility, or acid strength needs a chain from structure to bonding to the observed property. Answers that jump straight to the conclusion drop marks.

04

Energy and equilibrium signs

Sign conventions in enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs energy, and the direction of an equilibrium shift, are frequent sources of lost marks even for strong students.

05

Data-based questions

Paper 1B asks students to read unfamiliar experimental data, spot sources of error, and suggest improvements. Students who skip practical thinking in class find these marks hardest.

Internal assessment

The scientific investigation is 20% of the grade.

Each student carries out an open-ended investigation and writes a report of up to 3,000 words, marked by the school and moderated by the IB against four equally weighted criteria. All science students also take part in the collaborative sciences project, which is required but not graded.

Strong Chemistry investigations control variables carefully, collect enough data to show a trend, process uncertainties correctly, and evaluate the specific weaknesses of their method, such as heat loss or the precision of a titration endpoint.

What a tutor can and cannot do.

A tutor can teach the chemistry, data processing, and uncertainty skills the investigation needs, and explain the criteria. The student designs the investigation, collects and analyses the data, and writes the report. EliteMind does not write or complete assessed work.

How lessons work

A plan that follows the two-year course.

Year 1

Moles and bonding first

Make mole calculations automatic and secure the bonding models early, since energetics, equilibrium, and organic chemistry all depend on them.

Year 2

Investigation and mechanisms

Support the internal assessment within the rules, then complete the Reactivity topics, including HL mechanisms and electrochemistry, with mixed-topic practice.

Final term

Exam technique

Timed papers, a mark-by-mark review of calculations and explanations, and targeted practice on Paper 1B data questions.

Tutor standards

What every tutor we match must do.

The exact course, not just the subject

A tutor is matched on the specific course and level, such as IB Math AA HL or Cambridge IGCSE 0620 Extended, and recent experience teaching it.

Teaches to the mark scheme

Lessons connect content to how marks are actually awarded: command terms, paper structure, and the errors examiners see most.

Diagnoses before teaching

The first lessons identify where marks are being lost, using the student's own recent work, before a plan is set.

Keeps parents informed

Families get short, specific updates: what was covered, what improved, and what comes next.

Academic honesty, always

Tutors teach the skills behind coursework and internal assessments. They never write or complete assessed work.

Fit reviewed early

The match is reviewed after the first few lessons, and the plan or approach is adjusted if it is not working.

Singapore schools

Schools in Singapore that offer the IB Diploma.

Students at these schools may be able to take Chemistry as part of the Diploma, depending on each school's subject offerings. EliteMind is independent and not affiliated with any of these schools.

Tuition rates

What IB Chemistry tuition costs.

A practical market range for this kind of one-to-one tuition in Singapore is approximately S$55 to S$130 per hour. HL support and tutors with long IB Chemistry teaching experience tend to sit in the upper part of the range. This is planning guidance, not a quotation; the exact rate is confirmed before lessons begin.

IB Chemistry tuition FAQs

How much does IB Chemistry tuition cost in Singapore?

As an indicative Singapore market guide, one-to-one tuition for this course commonly falls around S$55 to S$130 per hour. Tutors with long experience of the exact syllabus tend to sit in the upper part of that range. EliteMind confirms the tutor's exact rate before any lesson starts.

What changed in the IB Chemistry syllabus?

The current course was first examined in 2025. Topics are now organised into Structure and Reactivity strands rather than numbered topics with options, Paper 3 and the options were removed, and Paper 1 gained data-based questions in section 1B. The internal assessment is a scientific investigation marked on four criteria.

Should my child take IB Chemistry at SL or HL?

HL Chemistry is required or strongly preferred for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and many chemistry and chemical engineering degrees. SL suits students who need a science in the Diploma without that requirement. Check university entry requirements before deciding.

Is HL Chemistry much harder than SL?

HL adds 90 teaching hours of extra content, including more demanding calculations, mechanisms, and electrochemistry, and its papers are longer. Students who are secure with moles and bonding by the middle of Year 1 cope best with the HL material.

Can a tutor help with the IB Chemistry internal assessment?

A tutor can teach the chemistry behind the investigation, explain the four criteria, and help the student understand data processing and uncertainties. The student must design the investigation, carry out the experiments, analyse the data, and write the report. EliteMind does not write or complete assessed work.

When is the IB Chemistry exam?

Most international schools in Singapore sit the May examination session at the end of Year 2. Some schools that follow the local January to November calendar sit the November session. Ask the school which session your child is entered for, because it sets the revision timeline.

Find an IB Chemistry tutor for the level and timeline.

Share SL or HL, the year group, the topics covered so far, recent marks, and the next deadline. We will recommend a tutor and a sensible starting point.
