IB Math AA tutor Singapore

IB Math AA tutors for SL and HL students in Singapore.

One-to-one support for Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, built around the papers your child will actually sit, the topics costing marks, and the school's exam timeline.

The course

What IB Math AA covers.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches is the more algebraic and calculus-focused of the two IB Diploma mathematics courses. SL has 150 recommended teaching hours and HL has 240. Both levels study the same five topics; HL goes further in each one.

Number and algebra

Sequences and series, exponents and logarithms, the binomial theorem, and proof. HL adds complex numbers, proof by induction and contradiction, and systems of equations.

Functions

Composite and inverse functions, transformations, quadratics, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions. HL adds polynomial theory, inequalities, and odd, even, and self-inverse functions.

Geometry and trigonometry

Trigonometric identities and equations, radian measure, and 3D geometry. HL adds vectors, lines and planes, and further trigonometric identities.

Statistics and probability

Descriptive statistics, regression, conditional probability, and the binomial and normal distributions. HL adds Bayes' theorem and continuous random variables.

Calculus

Differentiation, integration, kinematics, and optimisation. HL adds limits and continuity, implicit differentiation, further integration techniques, differential equations, and Maclaurin series.

Assessment

How AA SL and HL are examined.

Paper 1 removes the calculator entirely, so algebra has to be reliable by hand. Paper 2 allows a graphing calculator, but rewards setting the problem up correctly. HL students also sit Paper 3: one extended problem-solving paper. The Exploration is the internally assessed component.

Where marks go

Five places AA students commonly lose marks.

Most AA students who are "stuck at a 4 or 5" understand the content in class. The marks disappear in specific, repeatable ways, which is what the first lessons should identify.

01

Paper 1 without the calculator

Algebra and exact values that students normally check on a calculator: logarithm laws, surds, trigonometric exact values, and fractions inside calculus. Small slips cost the method marks that follow.

02

"Show that" and proof questions

Students reach the given answer but skip the line that earns the mark, or reverse the logic. Induction answers often lose marks on the base case, the assumption statement, or the concluding sentence.

03

Calculator use in Paper 2

The calculator only helps once the problem is set up correctly. Students lose time choosing the wrong method and lose marks for unsupported answers or for not giving answers to three significant figures.

04

Linking topics

AA questions often combine areas, such as a function feeding into an optimisation, or a probability distribution needing integration. Students who revise topic by topic struggle when the question crosses chapters.

05

HL Paper 3

One extended problem that builds from guided parts to an unfamiliar generalisation. It rewards patience and clear reasoning more than speed, and few students practise it often enough.

The Exploration

The internal assessment is 20% of the grade.

The Exploration is an individual written investigation, typically 12 to 20 pages, marked by the school and moderated by the IB. It is assessed out of 20 against the five criteria in the table. Criterion E rewards mathematics at the level of the course, so an AA HL Exploration is expected to use HL-standard mathematics.

The common problems are a topic that is interesting but mathematically thin, a topic far beyond the student's level, and reflection that is added at the end instead of running through the work. These are easier to fix at the proposal stage than in the final draft.

What a tutor can and cannot do.

A tutor can teach the mathematics involved, explain the criteria, and help the student judge whether a topic is workable. The student chooses the direction, carries out the mathematics, and writes every word. EliteMind does not write or complete assessed work.

How lessons work

A plan that follows the two-year course.

Year 1

Secure the foundations

Make algebra, functions, and early calculus reliable without a calculator, before HL-only topics start to build on them. Begin thinking about Exploration topics before the school sets the deadline.

Year 2

Exploration and full papers

Support the Exploration within the rules, finish the remaining syllabus, then move to timed Paper 1 and Paper 2 practice, and Paper 3 for HL.

Final term

Exam technique

Work through past papers under exam conditions, review every lost mark by type, and fix the patterns that repeat rather than re-teaching whole topics.

Schools in Singapore that offer the IB Diploma.

Students at these schools can take Math AA as part of the Diploma, subject to each school's own subject offerings. EliteMind is independent and not affiliated with any of these schools.

Tuition rates

What IB Math AA tuition costs.

A practical market range for one-to-one IB tuition in Singapore is approximately S$55 to S$130 per hour. HL support and tutors with long IB teaching experience tend to sit in the upper part of the range. This is planning guidance, not a quotation; the exact rate is confirmed before lessons begin.

IB Math AA tuition FAQs

How much does an IB Math AA tutor cost in Singapore?

As an indicative Singapore market guide, one-to-one IB tuition commonly falls around S$55 to S$130 per hour. HL support and tutors with long IB teaching experience tend to sit in the upper part of that range. EliteMind confirms the tutor's exact rate before any lesson starts.

Should my child take Math AA or Math AI?

AA suits students who are comfortable with algebra and abstract reasoning and who may need it for engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, or some economics degrees. AI suits students who are stronger with data, modelling, and technology. Check the entry requirements of the university courses your child is considering before deciding.

Is AA HL much harder than AA SL?

Yes. HL has 240 recommended teaching hours against 150 for SL, extra content in every topic, longer papers, and an additional Paper 3. Students who choose HL should be secure in algebra and calculus early in Year 1, because the HL-only material builds directly on them.

Can a tutor help with the Math AA Exploration?

A tutor can help a student choose a workable topic, understand the five assessment criteria, check that the mathematics is correct and at the right level, and respond to the teacher's feedback. The student must choose the direction, do the mathematics, and write the Exploration themselves. EliteMind does not write or complete assessed work.

When is the IB Math AA exam?

Most international schools in Singapore sit the May examination session at the end of Year 2. Some schools that follow the local January to November calendar sit the November session. Ask the school which session your child is entered for, because it sets the revision timeline.

Is online IB Math AA tuition effective?

It works well for mathematics when the tutor uses a shared digital whiteboard, the student writes out full working, and lessons include timed questions rather than only explanations. In-person lessons can suit students who need more structure to stay focused.
