IB English tutor Singapore

IB English A tutors for Language and Literature or Literature.

One-to-one support for SL and HL students in Singapore: sharper analysis for Paper 1, stronger comparisons for Paper 2, and confident preparation for the individual oral and the HL essay.

The course

What IB English A involves.

English A is offered as two courses: Language and Literature, which studies literary and non-literary texts such as speeches, advertisements, and articles, and Literature, which studies literary works only. Both are taught through three areas of exploration and ask students to build their own interpretations.

Readers, writers and texts

How meaning is made: the choices writers make, how readers respond, and how form and language shape a text.

Time and space

How texts reflect and respond to their historical and cultural contexts, and how they are read differently in different times and places.

Intertextuality: connecting texts

How texts relate to one another through genre, theme, and conventions, which prepares students directly for the comparative Paper 2.

Language and Literature

Combines literary works with non-literary bodies of work such as advertising, journalism, and political speech, and asks students to analyse both.

Literature

Focuses on literary works across forms, periods, and places, including works read in translation, with close reading at its centre.

The learner portfolio

A personal collection of notes, responses, and reflections kept throughout the course. It is not marked, but it is the raw material for every assessment.

Assessment

How IB English A is assessed.

Both courses share the same structure. Paper 1 is an unseen guided textual analysis, Paper 2 is a comparative essay on works studied in class, and the individual oral is assessed in school. HL students analyse two texts in Paper 1 and also write the HL essay.

Where marks go

Five places English students commonly lose marks.

English marks feel subjective, but the assessment criteria are specific. Most students who plateau are making a few repeated choices that can be changed with practice and precise feedback.

01

Summarising instead of analysing

Retelling what happens, or listing techniques without explaining their effect, keeps answers in the middle bands. Each point needs to show how a choice creates meaning.

02

No clear line of argument

Essays need a focused thesis that develops through the answer. A sequence of good observations without an argument linking them is marked down for focus and organisation.

03

Unbalanced Paper 2 comparisons

Writing about one work and then the other, with comparison only at the end, limits the mark. Strong answers compare throughout, against the exact question asked.

04

An individual oral that drifts

The oral must examine one global issue through both chosen texts. Students who describe the extracts, or lose the global issue halfway, lose marks on knowledge and focus.

05

Timing in Paper 1

HL students analyse two texts in 2 hours 15 minutes and SL students one text in 1 hour 15 minutes. Spending too long reading and planning leaves analysis unfinished.

The individual oral

Fifteen minutes that count for 20% to 30%.

The individual oral is a 10-minute prepared talk followed by 5 minutes of questions from the teacher, recorded in school. Students examine how one global issue is presented in an extract from each of two works, so the choice of issue and extracts largely decides how well it can go.

Good preparation means choosing a global issue that is specific enough to analyse, picking extracts that genuinely show it, and practising speaking from brief notes rather than a script, so the analysis sounds considered rather than recited.

What a tutor can and cannot do.

A tutor can teach analysis, help a student practise speaking about texts, and give feedback on the criteria. The student chooses the global issue and extracts, and the oral, the HL essay, and all written work must be the student's own. EliteMind does not write or complete assessed work.

How lessons work

A plan that follows the two-year course.

Year 1

Analysis habits

Practise unseen analysis regularly, build a vocabulary for discussing technique and effect, and keep the learner portfolio genuinely useful.

Oral and HL essay

Prepared, not scripted

Choose a workable global issue and extracts, rehearse the oral from notes, and for HL develop the essay's line of inquiry with time to redraft.

Final term

Paper 1 and Paper 2

Timed unseen analyses, comparative essay plans for likely questions, and close revision of the studied works.

Tutor standards

What every tutor we match must do.

The exact course, not just the subject

A tutor is matched on the specific course and level, such as IB Math AA HL or Cambridge IGCSE 0620 Extended, and recent experience teaching it.

Teaches to the mark scheme

Lessons connect content to how marks are actually awarded: command terms, paper structure, and the errors examiners see most.

Diagnoses before teaching

The first lessons identify where marks are being lost, using the student's own recent work, before a plan is set.

Keeps parents informed

Families get short, specific updates: what was covered, what improved, and what comes next.

Academic honesty, always

Tutors teach the skills behind coursework and internal assessments. They never write or complete assessed work.

Fit reviewed early

The match is reviewed after the first few lessons, and the plan or approach is adjusted if it is not working.

IB English tuition FAQs

How much does IB English tuition cost in Singapore?

As an indicative Singapore market guide, one-to-one tuition for this course commonly falls around S$55 to S$130 per hour. Tutors with long experience of the exact syllabus tend to sit in the upper part of that range. EliteMind confirms the tutor's exact rate before any lesson starts.

What is the difference between Language and Literature and Literature?

Language and Literature studies literary works alongside non-literary texts such as advertisements, speeches, and articles. Literature studies literary works only, including works in translation. The assessment structure is the same, and schools usually decide which course they offer.

How can my child improve in Paper 1?

Through regular timed practice on unseen texts with specific feedback: a focused thesis, analysis that explains the effect of each choice, and well-organised paragraphs. Reading widely, including non-literary texts for Language and Literature, also helps.

Can a tutor help with the individual oral?

A tutor can help a student understand the criteria, practise speaking about texts, and respond to questions. The student must choose their own global issue and extracts and prepare their own talk. EliteMind does not write or complete assessed work.

What is the HL essay?

A 1,200 to 1,500 word essay on one studied work or body of work, developing a line of inquiry the student chooses. It is written over time, externally assessed, and worth 20% of the HL grade.

When is the IB English exam?

Most international schools in Singapore sit the May examination session at the end of Year 2. Some schools that follow the local January to November calendar sit the November session. Ask the school which session your child is entered for, because it sets the revision timeline.
